4. Heron Rookery
Located on rocky Fairbank Point 1 mile from the shop, the Blue Heron
Rookery provides another prominent landmark in Morro Bay. The eucalyptus
trees on this point provide nesting and roosting sites for Great Blue
Herons as well as Egrets, Cormorants, and Night Herons. When paddling
by this point, one gets the feeling of an almost jungle setting with
the tall trees and squawks of the birds. The water off this point is
the deepest in the bay at almost 50 feet due to the strong currents
that scour out the bottom around it. During strong tidal flows, the
current can be very strong and concentrated here so it’s advisable
to give it a wide berth. Landing is also prohibited here.
